Start with these components prepared in advance: Rich simple syrup 2:1 (grapefruit and bay-leaf infused; see notes).

Combine the gin, aquavit, Campari, ruby red grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and the grapefruit and bay-leaf infused rich simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake vigorously to blend the ingredients and chill the mixture.

Double strain the cocktail into a chilled cocktail coupe to ensure a smooth texture.

Garnish with a slice of lemon, adding an optional star anise if desired.
