The Zinger

Stir the rye, Averna, and ginger syrup in a mixing glass with ice until well chilled.

Strain the mixture into an Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.

Garnish with an orange peel, which you may choose to flame, and/or add a piece of candied ginger as an optional touch.
